Why Bangkok is the Must Visit Thailand Destination for your Bucket List

Why Bangkok is the Must Visit Thailand Destination for your Bucket List

I just returned from a trip that completely reset my perspective on what a city can be.  After spending years dreaming of the neon lights and golden spires I saw on social media, I finally booked a flight to Bangkok, Thailand. I wanted to see if the reality matched the hype of it being the most visited city in the world, and let me tell you, it exceeded every expectation. It is a place where you can stand in a centuries old temple in the morning and sip a cocktail on a sixty first floor rooftop by sunset.

The Chaos and the Charm of the Capital

The first thing you notice when you land in Bangkok is the heat, but the second is the sheer energy. It is a beautiful, organised chaos. Tuk Tuks zip through traffic, the scent of grilled pork skewers fills every street corner, and the skyscrapers look like something out of a futuristic film. I spent my first afternoon just walking through the Old City, and I was struck by how the modern world just weaves itself around tradition.

I started my journey at the Grand Palace. It is the kind of place that takes your breath away. The intricate gold leaf and colourful glass mosaics are so detailed that photos barely do them justice. Entering the grounds costs about 500 Baht, which is roughly $15. It is the most expensive ticket in the city, but you cannot leave without seeing the Emerald Buddha. Just remember to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, or the guards will not let you in.

Top Recommendations and What They Cost

One of the best things about Bangkok in 2026 is that it remains incredibly affordable for the quality of experience you get. You can live like royalty on a modest budget. Here are the spots that made my trip unforgettable:

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): This is easily the most iconic landmark on the river. I took a cross river ferry for only 5 Baht (literally pennies) to get there. Climbing the steep steps for a view of the Chao Phraya River is a must. Entrance is about 100 Baht.
The Mahanakhon SkyWalk: For the best view in the city, this is it. Walking across the glass tray floor 314 meters in the air is terrifying and exhilarating. Tickets are around 1,100 Baht or $32, and it is worth every cent for the sunset.
• Chatuchak Weekend Market: If you are there on a Saturday or Sunday, go here. It is one of the largest markets in the world. You can find everything from vintage denim to custom home decor. I spent about $20 and came back with three shirts and a handmade leather wallet.
Street Food Crawl in Yaowarat: Chinatown at night is a sensory explosion. I had a massive bowl of rolled noodles and crispy pork for about $2.50. Look for the stalls with the longest lines; they are famous for a reason.
A River Dinner Cruise: I booked a mid range cruise for about $30. Seeing the temples lit up at night while eating a massive buffet is the most relaxing way to end a day of walking.

When to Go for the Best Experience

Timing is everything with Bangkok. I went in late November, which is the start of the cool and dry season. The weather was perfect, hovering around 28°C with low humidity, making it easy to walk for hours without feeling drained. This peak window runs from November to February.

However, if you want the trip of a lifetime and do not mind getting soaked, you have to go in April. Specifically, from April 13th to 15th for Songkran, the Thai New Year. The entire city turns into the world’s largest water fight. People carry giant water guns and buckets, and no one is safe. It is a massive, joyful celebration that feels like one big street party. If you prefer to avoid the crowds and save money on hotels, the shoulder months of May or October are great, though you might catch a few tropical rain showers.

Navigating the City Like a Local

I was surprised by how easy it was to get around. The BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway are spotless and air conditioned. Most trips cost between $0.50 and $1.50. When I wanted a bit more adventure, I used the Grab app to call a motorbike taxi. It is the fastest way to cut through the legendary Bangkok traffic, and most short rides are under $2.

Bangkok is a city that demands you to be present. It is loud, it is bright, and it is endlessly kind. Whether you are looking for spiritual peace in a hidden forest temple or want to dance until sunrise at a world class club, this city has a space for you. If you have been waiting for a sign to book that trip to Southeast Asia, this is it. You will come home with a full heart and a phone full of photos that your friends will actually be jealous of.
